I love reading about what Jesus did and said when he walked the earth. He was so different than anyone else. He asked religious leaders questions they couldn’t answer. He spent time with people that didn’t go to church. His ideas about what was important were so radically different from other people. He was compassionate and sensitive towards others but he wasn’t a sissy or a pushover. He didn’t back down from anyone. He was a very strong person emotionally and the way he spoke commanded respect and attention. He was completely unselfish. He was not well understood, even by those closest to him. But he couldn’t be too concerned with what others thought of him - he had a purpose driven life. People spread lies about him and he didn’t defend himself. They finally killed him.
I think people were uncomfortable with him – especially religious people. They had never seen or heard anyone like him and frankly, didn’t really know what to do with him. I think deep down, they knew what he said was the truth and that made them uncomfortable. They weren’t accustomed to hearing the truth. Some religious leaders had a lot of rules and regulations that they said people should follow. That didn’t bother people too much because many of the religious leaders didn’t follow the rules and regulations either. People felt okay about themselves. They compared themselves to other people they knew so they didn’t really seem so bad. Then Jesus comes along and rocks the boat with the things he said. He seemed to live up to and teach about a higher standard than they were used to, and that made them uncomfortable.
2,000 years ago they didn’t have Hula Hoops, or iPods, or Sunday afternoon football, or fund-raising car washes, or self-help classes in churches. It certainly was a different world back then, but people were basically the same. They laughed and cried. They hurt and bled. They lied, cheated, and stole. They had fun and spent time with family and friends. Time changes, there are new discoveries and inventions, but people generally stay the same.
I wonder sometimes how things would be if Jesus walked the earth again today. What he would look like? How he would spend his time? How would people treat him? Would he drive a car? Would he have a dog? Would he have a Hula Hoop or an iPod? Would people be uncomfortable around him? Would he be welcome in our churches? Would we kill him again?
